Scrum Alliance vs. Scrum.org Certification

Since we offer both Scrum Alliance Certified Scrum Product Owner® (CSPO) and Scrum.org Professional Scrum Product Owner I (PSPO I) trainings, it is important to know that while these trainings all have the same purpose, they differ in some aspects.

The Scrum Alliance workshops are usually more holistic in their design, while the Scrum.org workshops are more software oriented. You can find more differences between the two workshops in the FAQ section below.

The Product Owner Trainings Agenda Image

The Certified Scrum Product Owner CSPO Agenda

Our Certified Scrum Product Owner® (CSPO) covers all the important topics, and don't worry if something doesn't get enough attention during the course - our online training fills every gap. Ready to kickstart your success as a Product Owner?

Here's a more detailed overview of the topics we cover in our training:

1. Context of Agile

What does Agile mean? Why is it relevant and when should you apply it?

In our CSPO training, you will not only find the answers to these questions, but also learn how to apply techniques and concepts to your business and stakeholders.

With this knowledge, you will be ready to implement and support agility in your company even without a Scrum Master.

2. Road to Sprint One

One of the challenges every team faces is how to prepare for the very first sprint. What is it that we need to do before we can get the first sprint started?

Learn the most important steps a Product Owner has to do and how to guide them: From the creation of working agreements to the definition of a product goal or a product vision to the creation of an initial product backlog. You will get practical examples on how to implement these steps.

In most cases, our trainers perform these steps during the workshop and use the workshop as an example of how to systematically apply different tools to create these artifacts.

3. The Scrum Framework in Detail

We will now dive deeper into the Scrum framework. Because agility is a philosophy and Scrum is a tool that helps us to implement this philosophy.

You will learn about the three roles and their responsibilities in Scrum and everything you need to know about the Product Owner, the Developers and the Scrum Master.

We will show you how Sprint Planning, Daily Scrum, Product Backlog Refinement, Sprint Review and Sprint Retrospectives are conducted and what your tasks are as a Product Owner in these meetings.

You will also learn how a Product Goal and a Product Backlog, a Sprint Goal and a Sprint Backlog as well as Definition of Done and Product Increment are connected, defined and created.

4. Understanding Customers

A great Product Owner always puts the customer first. That's why we dedicate a significant part of our training (especially in the online course) to teaching you tools and techniques to create and deepen your understanding of the customer.

You will learn tools and techniques such as Design Thinking, Empathy Map Canvas, Value Proposition Canvas and Personas to develop a deep understanding of your customers. This will allow you to design products that are tailored to their exact needs.

5. Crafting Product Goals

A common product goal is essential to align all stakeholders. You will learn how to formulate such a goal, creating common ground with stakeholders.

One tool that many of our trainers use in their classroom courses and that is covered in the online course is our Product Goal Canvas.

6. Design And Test Business Models

Although very few Product Owners are actually responsible for designing the business model, this knowledge is still very valuable.

With the Business Model Canvas, you will learn how to develop a business model that is both valued by the customer and successful for the company. You will also learn techniques to validate assumptions and test business ideas.

7. Creating an Initial Product Backlog

Some Product Owners take over an existing Product Backlog, others have to create one from scratch. Regardless of the situation, knowing techniques for systematically creating a product backlog is very useful.

A well-structured Product Backlog is essential for the work of the Product Owner. No matter if you take over an existing Product Backlog or have to create one from scratch, you will learn techniques like User Story Mapping to create such a Backlog systematically.

8. Working on Your Product Backlog

The Product Backlog is never finished, but is constantly being refined. You will learn how to prioritize and refine elements as a Product Owner to give your team clear direction.

In addition to prioritization techniques, we also teach how developers typically estimate the effort required to implement an element, what your role is in this process, and how you can make sense of this information.

9. Building a Roadmap and Tracking Progress

Sometimes Product Owners need to create a roadmap for their stakeholders. You will learn when and how to create such a roadmap and stay flexible at the same time. This way you stay agile without losing the overview.

The all-important question is how detailed we go and how much flexibility we keep within the roadmap. In our CSPO training, your trainer will help you understand when a roadmap makes sense, how you can create it and who you should involve in the creation.

Bring Your Own Ideas & Questions

We encourage participants to bring their questions to the training. Any question and real-world example from your side will make everything you and others learn more tangible. It will also result in more energy throughout the training which is connected to better learning.

Frequently Asked Questions About the CSPO

CSPO (Certified Scrum Product Owner) and PSPO (Professional Scrum Product Owner) are both recognized certifications in the field of Scrum, focusing on the role of the Product Owner. Here are the main differences:

  • Issuing Organizations: CSPO is issued by the Scrum Alliance, while PSPO is issued by Scrum.org.
  • Certification Process: CSPO requires a two-day training course with no formal exam, while PSPO requires passing an exam for which no formal training is necessary.
  • Content Focus: Both cover similar topics, but Scrum.org places a stronger emphasis on the application of Scrum in software development.

The choice between CSPO and PSPO depends on individual preferences and professional requirements. Both certifications are recognized worldwide and provide a solid foundation for the role of the Product Owner.

Getting a Certified Scrum Product Owner (CSPO) certification from the Scrum Alliance demonstrates your understanding of Scrum principles and your ability to apply them in real-world situations. The steps to achieve this certification are as follows:

  • Course Enrollment: Register for a CSPO course led by a Certified Scrum Trainer (CST).
  • Course Completion: Actively participate and complete the course. There's no exam; participation is key.
  • License Agreement: After the course, you'll get an email to create a Scrum Alliance account. Log in and accept the license agreement.
  • Certification: Post agreement acceptance, you'll be listed as a CSPO on the Scrum Alliance website.
  • Maintenance: The certification is valid for two years. To renew it, pay a fee and earn Scrum Education Units (SEUs) through continued learning.

Remember, the goal of earning a CSPO certification is not just to have a credential, but to gain the understanding and tools that will enable you to effectively function as a Product Owner and contribute to your team's success.

No, there is no certification exam for the Certified Scrum Product Owner (CSPO) certification from the Scrum Alliance. The certification is granted based on full attendance and active participation in a CSPO training course conducted by a Certified Scrum Trainer (CST). Upon completion of the course, you'll be eligible for the CSPO certification, given you've demonstrated an understanding of the Scrum principles and the role of a Product Owner.

Both Product Owners and Product Managers play significant roles in product development, but their focus and responsibilities differ.

A Product Owner is a key player in agile Scrum teams. They decide what the development team should create by prioritizing requirements from the backlog and continuously liaising with the team. They focus on the details, meaning they work closely with the development team to ensure the work aligns with the product vision and customer requirements.

On the other hand, the Product Manager is responsible for the long-term vision of the product. They focus on the "why" and "what" of the product. They need to understand customer needs, the market, competitors, and trends. Their responsibilities include defining product strategy, collaborating with various teams (like marketing, sales, customer service, etc.), and communicating the product vision to all stakeholders.

In short, while the Product Owner is more focused on the day-to-day work and the requirements of the development team, the Product Manager focuses on the strategic side of the product. But both roles are important and complement each other to create a successful product.

Whether the Certified Scrum Product Owner® (CSPO) is worth it depends on your personal and professional goals. If you are aiming for a role in an agile team or organization, especially as a Product Owner, the CSPO certification can be very valuable. It demonstrates your understanding of Scrum and the Product Owner role, provides access to a professional network, and imparts practical skills. Nevertheless, it's important to apply the knowledge learned and to weigh any investment in training against the potential return.

Certification for Teams & Companies

In-house Certified Scrum Product Owner Courses

Our Certified Scrum Product Owner® (CSPO) in-house training is an excellent solution for teams and companies that want to take agility and Product Ownership to the next level.

With a minimum of 8 participants, our certified trainers come directly to your company. The intensive training is tailored to the specific needs and challenges of your team or company.

A great advantage of in-house training is the possibility to use real problems and projects as learning examples. This not only facilitates the understanding of the theory, but also enables the immediate application of what has been learned in practice.

In-house trainings are usually more cost-efficient per employee than public courses and at the same time save external costs, e.g. for travel and accommodation. In addition, these in-house trainings can be certified by various renowned organisations, which adds value to the professional development of your team.
